In a nutshell

The ornamental ivy, Hedera helix ‘Wellenspiel’, is a beautiful ivy with leaves with three forward-facing lobes, often twisted with a wavy leaf edge.

The lateral lobes sometimes cover the central lobe. All this represents its main varietal characteristic. The center of the leaf is green with a few small irregular spots, mint green or gray-green. The edges of the leaf are cream-colored. In winter, the leaf edges turn pink in very cold and dry weather.

Its growth is medium and branched for a compact shape. To be used in pots and in small areas of the garden as ground cover. It is a perfectly hardy ivy.

History

This cultivar was discovered in 2004 by Robert Krebs of the German Ivy Society in the garden of the monastery in Flensburg, Germany, where it was sold under the name ‘Lemon Swirl’. In 2007, it was also sold by a florist in Böklund, Germany, under the name ‘Nina’. In 2011, it was given the name ‘Wellenspiel’. It is now sold under this name alone.
